A walk around Bramley, Leeds

Still going strong, 50 years after I was a member. Through 2nd Bramley Scouts I learnt to canoe, pot-hole, camp, hike and more, and I am always delighted to see it survive here.

It was 'The Old Unicorn' when I had my stag party here in 1975... Since then it has been completely changed, refurbished and extended.. but it still kept the 'old' part of the name.

The Pump Head in Bramley. At one time this would have been the main source of water for many families. The handle is welded down, but the lion must have heard many local stories as the locals drew their water.

'Church Ginnel' - One of the old footpaths ('ginnels') that used to cross Bramley, and still in use for shortcuts.

Another row of terraced houses, this time in red brick .. was this a mark of status for the middle managers, experienced hands and 'professionals' of the late Victorian age?

In my youth there were streets of 'back to back' terraced houses running up the hill from left to right. The stormy clouds reflect the turbulent changes over the last 50 years, but the rich grass shows that regrowth is possible.

'The mill at the end of the street' was the story of Victorian Bramley. Most of the mills have gone now, but the chimney of this one still watches over the plain, but identical houses where some of the workers would have lived.

This terrace evoked a strong memory of the 1970's - the lack of cars on the street. This was a working class area in the 1960's and only a selected few were able to drive let alone to afford to buy a car.
